A space for creativity, community and connection – right in the heart of town.
Thanks to support from North East Lincolnshire Council’s Activation Community Engagement Fund, we’ve been able to transform a vacant shop unit in Freshney Place into something special: People Make Grimsby.
It’s not a shop. It’s a community art space. A place where people come together to make, share and celebrate creativity.
Creating the Space
We started with bare walls and flickering lights, and turned them into a bright, welcoming home for art.
- OSB cladding from Jordan Got Wood (beautifully fitted by Claire Curtis Joinery) gave us walls ready to showcase local talent.
- Lighting and sockets were brought to life by Wills Wiring Services.
- Furniture and equipment came from the kind-hearted donation of Beacon Academy School’s art department, including a nearly new etching press!
Moving it all in was a real community effort, with Roy Laughton Removals and Lewis Removals taking extra care of our vintage treasures (that Victorian press is no joke!). And finally, our bold signage from MD Signs Barton gave us our new identity in Freshney Place.
It’s Not a Shop…
Our front-of-house area is designed to shine a light on local makers – something that we are very passionate about. Here, you’ll find displays of work created by the people of Grimsby – from prints and artwork to crafted items and more.
It’s about sharing skills, supporting makers, and encouraging sustainable, circular practices. Instead of sales, we ask for donations, so every penny goes back into the community.
Right now, you can see prints from our Meet Us At Albert’s project, People Make Grimsby merch, and work by local makers like Lucy, The Humber Printmaker, Chris Gilleard and Seagull Swamp.
Why “People Make Grimsby”?
Because towns aren’t made by buildings; they’re made by people. By the ideas, creativity, and kindness that flow between them.
This space is here for everyone: to learn, to make, to share, to connect. Whether you want to roll up your sleeves, browse local creations, or simply spend some time in a welcoming, creative environment – you’re part of it.
