We are excited to announce our project – Meet Us At Albert’s
Starting with Albert Gait, the founder of the printing works on Victoria Street, Grimsby, we aim to explore the rich printmaking history of our area. Collecting stories from those who have experiences working in the industry of printmaking, and share with the wider community about our culture and heritage, with the ultimate aim to get the town printmaking again!
This is all possible due a project grant from North East Lincolnshire Council, Create North East Lincolnshire and supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
We have spent A LOT of time over the past few weeks sorting through the treasures contained in Grimsby Archives and Grimsby Central Library, to uncover a wealth of information about our area’s printing history. There is more than we imagined!
This photo shows WJ Eden – ‘Bookseller, Printer, Stationer, Bookbinder’ of Victoria Street West, Grimsby. A copy can be seen on the staircase to the basement in the library.
Eden is first listed in Lincolnshire Directory in 1863 (the same year as Albert Gait)
Our project is starting to come together – a HUGE THANK YOU for your shares and contributions so far. If you have any specific information we may find useful don’t forget to comment on our original posts to make sure we see them!
Next – we have some specific questions to ask… stay tuned and follow our page if you think you may be able to contribute.
Thanks @grimsbycentrallibrary & @grimsbyarchives for your help!
A beautiful pic we found in the local history section of Grimsby Central Library.
Taken c. 1964 of Victoria Street North, Grimsby. The building in the foreground was, at that time, owned by Albert Gait and housed Gait’s printing press (we think, although we can’t see any signage here?). We have learnt that it was previously the Artillery Drill Hall. The building in the background is the magnificent Victoria Flour Mill.
From what we have discovered, plans to revamp ‘Castle Press’ for retail were shelved 5 years or so ago. Wouldn’t it be great to get this building back in use again?
